Contractors Association of West Virginia Kicks-Off New Construction Leadership Program
The Contractors Association of West Virginia (CAWV) has started the newly developed program created to educate young professionals on the many perspectives and tools of the construction industry and focuses on maximizing the potential of newer industry professionals. The Construction Leadership Program - Class of 2023 – will meet every other Thursday in various locations throughout the state from mid-January through mid-June with a total of 12 educational seminars and a combined project tour and networking event. Program courses cover a number of topics and explore the many facets of how a construction business works. Courses include contract documents, bonding, bidding process, conflict resolution, risk management and more.
The first course of the program was held January 12 at the Morgantown Waterfront Hotel in Morgantown. The Class of 2023 heard from Herb Faulkenberry, vice president of sales marketing at Oglebay Resort and Conference Center, and former professional snow skier and rodeo competitor. He has traveled as an international lecturer and trainer on the topics of sales, marketing, customer service, and business management.
CAWV President James Ridgeway attended the event and welcomed young leaders to the first course of the program. “Today the CAWV is starting a new path to help you, our future leaders, to improve your skills as a professional in the construction industry,” President Ridgeway told participants. “I’m excited for this journey and look forward to you growing and developing relationships over the next few months."
The sponsor for this course was 84 Lumber. Sponsorships are still available for anyone interested in sponsoring a class. Please contact Shelly Hartley at shartley@cawv.org for more information. The next course will be held Thursday, January 26 from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center.
CAPTION: The first course of the CAWV Construction Leadership Program began with an interactive icebreaker challenge. Teams of five were asked to build a tower using limited materials, giving participants the opportunity to work together to achieve a common goal. The exercise was designed to help to reveal strengths and opportunities for growth. The team with the tallest standing tower included (from left) Justin Smith, A.L.L. Construction, Inc., John Cvechko, Central Contracting, Inc., Will Bowman, Persinger & Associates, Inc., Ben Robinson, Kokosing Construction Company, and Scott Hamm, West Virginia Paving, Inc.
