The CAWV Calendar of Events is available for members at www.cawv.org. Under the Events section of the site members will find specific details on upcoming events and meetings, such as the Midyear Meeting, Golf Outing and Annual Meeting. As the association plans and promotes events, different sections are added to keep members up to date on association functions. As dates are finalized for future meetings and events, they are added to the calendar. Preliminary details on events such as the Spring Meeting (May 10), CAWV Congressional Fly In (May 23), Golf Outing (June 1), and Annual Meeting (July 12-15) are available on the Calendar. For more information, contact Lindsay Stephens at (304) 342-1166 or lstephens@cawv.org.
CAWV ACCEPTING SCHOLARSHIP APPLICANTS
The CAWV Scholarship Foundation Board of Trustees wants to remind members that they are currently accepting applications from eligible West Virginia college/university students for the 2012 Scholarship awards. This year’s top award has been increased to $5,000. Also, in years past, the foundation has made several additional awards to students for their academic achievements. All CAWV members are encouraged to promote the annual scholarship program. Also, any member who knows of a deserving West Virginia college resident - sophomore, junior or senior - who meets the qualifications for the monetary award should advise them to complete and return an application form. Application deadline is February 24. Additional information, including an application, may be obtained online at the CAWV’s website or by contacting Pat McDonald at (304) 342-1166 or pmcdonald@cawv.org.
STATE MEETING BEING FINALIZED - MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW
CAWV members are asked to mark their calendars and plan to attend the CAWV State Meeting being held on Wednesday, March 21, in conjunction with Expo 2012. The Program Committee is finalizing details on the keynote speaker. The meeting will feature presentation of the annual safety awards, scholarship and concrete awards. Watch future Newsletters for full details.
CANSTRUCTION TEAM RAISING FUNDS FOR EVENT
CAWV Young Contractors are finalizing plans for the Canstruction competition. The committee has met and chosen a structure to build. Canstruction is an annual competition where teams of professionals within the design and construction industry compete to build incredible structures made entirely of canned foods. The competition is open to the public, who are invited to view the structures by donating food as an entry fee. The committee ordered nearly 1,800 pounds of food last year, which was donated to the Covenant House Food Pantry following the competition.
“Canstruction competitions raise tons of food each year for those less fortunate,” said Committee Chairman Rob Williams. “We are proud to be participating again this year.” The committee is accepting donations for the nearly $2000 food purchase. Contributions are tax deductible. Checks should be made out to Covenant House and submitted to the Contractors Association of West Virginia. For additional information, contact Lindsay Stephens at (304) 342-1166 or lstephens@cawv.org.
CHERYL CLARK JOINS CAWV
CAWV members will notice a new voice starting next week, as Cheryl Clark takes over as staff assistant. Clark has an extensive background in medical management and is excited to become a part of the construction industry. She will be handling project information, the CAWV Planroom, and incoming calls. CAWV members are encouraged to call or stop by and welcome her as the newest member of the association staff. She may be reached at planroom@cawv.org or (304) 342-1166.
YOUR HELP IS NEEDED IN FINALIZING YEAR-END BOOKS
As we approach the end of the year, we ask your assistance in finalizing our books. Contractors returning their Fourth Quarter Volume Dues Statement would greatly assist this process. If you have any questions, please contact Wendy Long at (304) 342-1166 or long@cawv.org.
EXPO NEWS
The March 21 and 22, 2012 EXPO trade show is rapidly taking shape. The seminar agenda is being finalized now and on-line registration will open in the near future. There is still time to reserve exhibit space, advertise in the show program or to become an Honor Exhibitor. Visit www.wvexpo.com for complete show information and electronic contract documents or contact EXPO staff at (304) 342-3976.

SAFE HANDLING OF FLAMMABLE AND COMBUSTIBLE LIQUIDS
Dangerous liquid fuels are found on most construction projects. Make sure they are kept in clearly marked containers.
Know how to safely store and use flammable and combustible liquids.
*......... Use fire safe products when possible. This goes a long way in helping to reduce or eliminate fire dangers.
*......... Beware of using gasoline, benzene, or other flammables as cleaners. Less dangerous products are available that will work as well.
*......... Keep only a minimum supply of flammables and combustibles on hand.
*......... Store your supply away from building(s).
*......... DO NOT store materials in boiler, electrical panel, or air-conditioning equipment rooms.
*......... Protect against static electricity buildup when dispensing these liquids from drums into metal containers. Ground all drums, and during filling, clip a wire between the drum and the container being filled.
*......... Use only approved safety cans for storing flammables.
*......... Oil, grease, and solvent soaked rags should be kept in a self-closing container. Change or dispose of cleaning rags frequently.
Call the CAWV at 304-342-1166 for help with your safety issues.

AGC LAUNCHES “TRANSPORTATION IS JOB #1" CAMPAIGN
With only 73 days remaining until the expiration of the latest highway and transit authorization extension, today AGC kicked-off a comprehensive grassroots and communications campaign asking Congress to take action on a reauthorization bill before March 31, 2012. The campaign, called Make Transportation JOB #1, will continue to build momentum for passage of a reauthorization bill.
The time to engage members of Congress is now. Both the House and Senate are in position to move their respective bills but they need to be encouraged to act. AGC members nationwide have worked hard to get the reauthorization bill to this point and help is needed to push to ensure members of Congress hear from their constituents of the need to Make Transportation JOB #1 and pass a highway and transit reauthorization bill. Over the next several weeks AGC members and business colleagues need to:
1......... Send letters to Representatives and Senators;
2......... Sign a petition expressing support for passing a highway and transit bill;
3......... Use a complete grassroots toolkit – available on the AGC website – with sample letters to the editor and guidance about arranging effective meetings with Representatives and Senators.
AGC would like to thank the chapters and members who have already participated in the campaign. To date, 429 letters have been sent to Congress asking them to pass a highway and transit bill. Only 21 signatures have been added to AGC’s online petition so we ask that you go onto our website, www.agc.org/roads, sign the petition today, and encourage your employees and colleagues to do the same.
Getting a highway and transit authorization bill passed in Congress and signed into law prior to March 31, 2012, will not be easy. It is vital that AGC members engage business associates (suppliers, subcontractors, insurance, bonding, financial services, etc.), labor organizations and other non-construction businesses in this effort. We need a true team effort to get this done.
TRANSPORTATION DAY GENERATES TALK ABOUT STATE’S HIGHWAY NETWORK
CAWV members joined WVBT coalition members on January 12 to flood the Capitol with people interested in a long-term solution to the state’s highway funding crisis. Members wore reflective vests to make the message, “Roads = Jobs” visible to state lawmakers. Both the House of Delegates and Senate sessions were filled with members promoting the message. Media joined members for a press conference and joint meeting of the House and Senate transportation committees. Media outlets ran stories on the event highlighting potential solutions and discussing the issues facing the continued construction and maintenance of a safe and modern highway system. In addition to the following editorials and newspaper articles that were generated as a result of Transportation Day, CAWV Executive Director Mike Clowser discussed the issue on Wednesday’s edition of MetroNews TalkLine with Hoppy Kercheval.
(WV Public Broadcasting 01/13) West Virginia is a lightly populated rural state with a huge network of roads and highways which need constant maintenance. Yet the highways system is now funded at about the same level as it was 16 years ago.
Highways chief floats road bond issue
(Charleston Daily Mail 01/13) Advocates for the State Road Fund gathered in the House of Delegates chamber at the state Capitol Thursday during a subcommittee hearing.
King Coal Highway: Approval of $1 billion bond could fund usable segment
(Bluefield Daily Telegraph 01/14) A proposed $1 billion bond could help create a usable segment of the King Coal Highway in Mercer County if approved by state voters.
(WV MetroNews 01/16) "Things have changed in Congress. We're not going to get the federal highway funds that we got in the past. We're not going to get the earmarks of the past," Tom Witt said. "If we really want to have a modern transportation system, which helps all dimensions of our economy, we're all just going to have to man it up and woman it up and pay up."
(Beckley Register Herald 01/17) Nobody likes the thought of higher taxes and fees, but we would encourage the citizenry to weigh all the factors. A road bond, along with public-private partnerships, can move these new road construction plans forward in the Mountain State — providing jobs, improving access and opening the door to economic development.
Road bond - Proposal merits consideration
(Bluefield Daily Telegraph 01/17) And before voters can even have a say on such a long-term bond issue, lawmakers in Charleston must agree to place the actual bond issue on the ballot this year.
